Thoughts on a door knocker.
A kid stopped by my house the other day asking for donations to help support the fight for marriage equality. He had a lot of convincing material as to why you should donate. The anti-marriage equality groups had over 6x the funding combined. The most disturbing of which was “Focus on the Family”, a supposed “Christian” group, although I have a hard time finding where in the bible it says it’s okay to:
1) use money to sway politics - (pretty sure there was a big issue with that)
2) to interfere and force your will on others - (also, what was the point of the gospels?)
I explained to him that while I completely support what he is fighting for, I don’t believe in using money for political issues and would not be able to donate. So instead, I’d just like to spread the word on what everyone can do. Vote. Vote informed. There are more than 2 people on the ballot this november. Make sure you know what you’re backing, and don’t make the mistake of tying yourself to a “party”. You’re better than that, you’re an individual, you don’t have the exact political views of a giant organization backed by terrible companies like monsanto, tyson, and big pharma (both sides here).
One of my favorite resources is a site called Project Vote Smart. Find your representatives that actually represent You. You don’t have to vote Right because you’re a christian, or Left because you went to a liberal arts school. Vote for what you believe in, and know what that is - you owe it to yourself.
